An RL agent finds matrix-multiplication algorithms that beat human-designed ones, including improving a 50-year-old record for 4×4 matrices in a finite field.

What happened and why it matters

Matrix multiplication underlies all of deep learning. AlphaTensor found provably correct algorithms that improved on Strassen-era records, a direct case of AI improving the mathematics that AI runs on.
