GNoME predicts 2.2 million new crystals

DeepMind's GNoME identifies 380,000 stable materials, an order-of-magnitude expansion of known stable inorganic crystals.

What happened and why it matters

The Graph Networks for Materials Exploration project predicted millions of new crystal structures, with hundreds independently synthesised by external labs. Some claims were later disputed as to novelty and usefulness, which tempers the score.
