An agent pipeline generates ideas, runs ML experiments and writes complete papers for about $15 each.

What happened and why it matters

The AI Scientist automated the whole research loop on small ML problems. Paper quality was modest and the reviews were automated, but it was a concrete prototype of automated AI research.
