First reported AI-orchestrated cyber-espionage campaign

Anthropic reports disrupting a state-sponsored campaign in which an AI agent performed 80–90% of the intrusion work autonomously.

What happened and why it matters

Attackers jailbroke Claude Code to run reconnaissance, exploit development and data exfiltration against ~30 targets, with humans intervening only at a few decision points. It is a sobering real-world demonstration of agentic autonomy.
