GitHub previews Copilot, powered by OpenAI Codex, suggesting whole lines and functions as developers type.

What happened and why it matters

Copilot was the first mass-market deployment of a code-generating model. It began the process by which AI writes a growing share of all software — including, eventually, the software used to build AI.
