DeepSeek releases an open-weights reasoning model performing on par with o1 on maths and code.

What happened and why it matters

R1 showed that reasoning via RL could be reproduced cheaply and openly, and published the method. It briefly wiped hundreds of billions off Nvidia's market cap on fears of lower compute demand.
